Elegance is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside.

Ah, the trickiness that is quotes, credit, and accuracy.

It's all too easy for a misquote, or misattribution, to spread and permeate it's way into our cultural consciousness - especially on the internet - especially when the quote and/or the person being quoted is well known.

Type "Coco Chanel Quotes" into pinterest and you get a list of results that scrolls forever, among those search results is this quote "Elegance is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside."

And this quote "Elegance comes from being as beautiful inside as outside."

And then there's "Elegance is being equally beautiful inside and out." Which was used by Chanel (the brand) in a nail polish ad, alongside other well known Coco Chanel quotes.

Which is correct? Where did the error come from? When was it introduced? Was it originally misheard? Maybe she said them all, at different times? Is it a translation issue?

Who knows…

And maybe we'll never know.
